The artillery and tanks were used to support Marine patrols into the DMZ as part of Operation Prairie

Because of its location on the Cua Viet River that skirted the boundary of the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ)

as South Vietnamese forces halted the North Vietnamese advance towards Saigon

The base was named for 1st Lieutenant Mark Enari, the first 4th Infantry Division member awarded the Silver Star (posthumously) in Vietnam, who was killed in action on 2 December 1966.
