Some months ago IMA purchased a portion of a remarkable named uniform collection out of Indiana

The Asano were the daimyo (feudal lords) of the Hiroshima Domain at the time that the han system was abolished as part of the Meiji Restoration in 1871

they were still in crude form

but was unique in feeding multiple rounds from a tubular buttstock magazine similar to the Spencer rifle

Nice looking hilt here reflecting approximately some gilded finish

A fine maker marked silver wound badge with original case box by Wachtler & Lange of Mittweida. It is constructed out of a die struck, zinc alloy base that has been silver washed. The oval badge depicts an embossed profile of a mobile swas, above an M35 pattern helmet, which is above two crossed broad swords. This then lies on a pebbled field and is surrounded by a laurel leaf and berry wreath which is tied together
